The Joyful Alternative: 15 Years of Critical Mass

by Robert B. Livingston (gruaudemais [at] yahoo.com)
For just a couple of hours on the last Friday of each month, hundreds of cyclists informally ride together to claim the streets which are normally ruled by automobiles. The gathering is part celebration and part peaceful protest. The main message: we still have a choice to live our lives in a way that is more thoughtful of the world's resources, to live in a way that is more socially nurturing of life and health, and to live our lives with more joy.

Today's ride marked the spontaneous demonstration's 15th year.

Here are a few photos from the beginning of the ride.

Hope some other riders have some more!

Some who haven't tried it say that the cyclists' main purpose is to infuriate the automobile drivers.

More likely, I think, is that they wish to demonstrate a joyful alternative to a culture that has become more and more destructive.

Good show, keep it up. There ought to also be a workhorses, wagons and ploughing show, mostly in the countryside but never to be forgotten.

MAINLY HOWEVER; coal, gas, oil, and atomic energy is destroying the planets livability and therefore the last forty-four years of ecological green revolution has brought into being the hi-tech tools to put in place wind, tidal, and solar power which tranforms to electricity and is more power than can be used by society. No more blackouts. This non-pollution solution is given freely in natures kinder laws and provides work for all and forever more. Viva social liberation. End pollution wars, not endless wars for more pollution.

Primitivism is great, but all the world will not be at peace until ALL institutions of slavery are destroyed. INCLUDING the enslavement of "work" horses, who's main goal in life is to run free and build a strong, successful heard, just like us. If you want to bring down industrialism, you can't just turn back technology; you've got to do away with the whole system of wage slavery, of endless toil, of gods, masters, and kings and armies.
