Just to give everyone an update, we are doing this campaign to save the Sierra Nevada because the Sierra is crucial to all of us here in California.
Not only do we get 60% of our drinking water from there, but half of the state's plants and animals live there as well. But Sierra Pacific Industries has been clear-cutting the Sierra Nevada forests at alarming rates. They have already clear-cut hundreds of thousands of acres and have plans to cut over 1 million more.
We know that the main reason that SPI is able to continue doing this is because people just aren't aware that it is happening, and the businesses that buy their wood are asking them to change. So we are going to change that. We are going to spread the word about what SPI is doing to the Sierra Nevada and convince them to change their practices. There are three main ways we will do this here in the area:
1) Recruiting more people and getting them aware and involved in the campaign
2) Business outreach- getting local businesses to sign a letter saying they want more sustainable forest practices
3) Protests/Actions- to get the media and SPI's attention to let them know what we want
That brings me to our first protest this coming Saturday!
Come out and help us tell Sierra Pacific Industries: We want
responsible logging, not clear-cutting!
This protest will be a great opportunity to get involved and active in the campaign. Just to let everyone know, New Home Building Supply is a known seller of SPI wood- and even though this will not be a protest against them, it will be a great way to let SPI know we are here and want them to change.
I strongly invite anyone interested to come out and join this event, it will be a great experience and a lot of fun. Please contact me (via phone or email) so I can get a sense of how many people will be participating, or if you have any questions. I also encourage anyone who wants to learn more about this campaign to contact me so we can set up a meeting to talk about it.
