Coastal communities throughout Marin are calling on volunteers Saturday to become trash-collecting beachcombers for a day.

Part of a statewide effort put on by the state Coastal Commission, Coastal Cleanup Day draws 50,000 volunteers who tidy up 700 cleanup sites statewide. Since its founding in 1985, 750,000 participants have removed more than 12 million pounds of trash from the state's shorelines, according to the commission's Web site.

This year in Marin, the event features a three-hour cleanup of the county's shorelines, followed by a barbecue at the Bay Model in Sausalito.

Marin has its share of dirty spots, including San Rafael Creek, which was named as one of 10 "trash hot spots" in the Bay Area by the group Save the Bay.

Trash brought downstream by San Rafael Creek meets trash from the marina across from Pickleweed Park, and bay tides push back to trap trash at the shoreline, the group says.

Saturday will give a chance for people to help.

"We are stewards to the water - we are water resource specialists and make sure the water is safe for navigation," said the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Keley Stock, a park ranger at the Bay Model and Marin County's Coastal Cleanup Day coordinator.

"It's

a perfect fit for us," she said.

"It's a great opportunity for families or friends to get together and make a difference in a couple of hours," said Cory Bytof, San Rafael volunteer program coordinator.

A noontime barbecue at the Bay Model is open to all who participate in the morning cleanup campaign.
