Pt. Reyes form to discuss grazing rules
Staff Report
Article Launched: 08/20/2007 11:28:29 PM PDT
New regulations for grazing lands will be the subject of a 6 p.m. Thursday public workshop at The Dance Palace, at corner of 5th and B streets in Point Reyes Station.
The forum, hosted by the California Regional Water Quality Control Board, will discuss state requirements for controlling water pollution from .
Those requirements are an attempt to reduce contamination of the waters of Tomales Bay by disease-causing microbes. The source of that contamination, according to the state, could be runoff from residential areas, failing septic systems, boat discharge and agricultural runoff from dairies and ranch lands.
The problem is especially acute because of Tomales Bay's shellfish industry, as well as its role as a destination for swimmers and boaters.
To fight the bay's contamination, the state plans to introduce increased regulation of grazing lands through waste discharge requirements.
