A txt/rtf/odt/doc version is needed, so that people from other communities can benefit from this great idea.

Dear Business Leader,

Though we have most likely never met face to face, we've maintained a relationship for some time now. As leaders in commerce, you have provided us with goods and services over the years that we otherwise might not have created on our own. In turn, we have supported you with our labor and customer dollars. While we may not always see eye to eye, if there's one thing we can agree on, as residents of Santa Cruz and citizens of this country, it's that the war in Iraq has been a colossal mistake, and the people who led us into it must be held accountable.

As you are probably aware, the list of grievances against the Bush Administration are considerable: An endless war on terror, hundreds of thousands dead in Iraq, torture, kidnapping, signing statements, domestic surveillance, detentions, deportations, civil rights & habeas corpus gone, stolen elections and the list goes on. For almost a decade now, we have lived under an administration that is taking us down the road to despotism.

For all these reasons, there has been a nationwide call for a general strike on the 6th anniversary of the horrendous attacks upon the World Trade Center - No work, no school, no shopping. No longer will we allow the tragedies of 911 to be used as a rallying point and symbolic justification for war. Instead, we are encouraging people to spend the day reflecting, mourning, and protesting what has happened to this nation in the wake of September 11th. We humbly ask that you consider participating by closing your doors for one day in solidarity.

We fully recognize that this request is not to be taken lightly. More than anyone, you stand to sacrifice the most; however, it is precisely because of your power and standing in the community that your participation has the potential to make this a watershed moment in American history. We also understand this presents you with a dilemma of epic proportions - you must weigh your everyday business needs with your sense of moral outrage and desire for justice. We only hope that for one day, the latter will take precedence.

By closing your doors on September 11th, not only will you will be taking a decisive stance against the disastrous Bush Administration but you will also have won our confidence. Your bravery will be remembered and we will continue to support you for years to come. Together, this can be our moment.

As the Bush Administration prepares to ratchet up the rhetoric against Iran this Fall, we ask you, if we do not speak out together now, when will we? As many before us have said, there comes a point when silence becomes betrayal. Let us not be silent on September 11th, the time to act is now. While we still can.

Respectfully, . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . http://www.strike911.org

Gosh if we get every "progressive" business in Santa Cruz to close, maybe we'll stop the war!

What a complete waste of time.

Better to build the real antiwar movement

But there's no reason to be so dismissive of one tactic over another. To claim that another mass march embodies the "real" antiwar movement better than a general strike is to miss the point entirely - we need to employee ALL tactics against the Bush Regime and its wars of aggression. I'll see you in the streets.

if there's gonna be a general strike.. where are all the unions?
by Fuck 911
No school, work, and shopping! Sounds like fun, but the pretext of "9/11" is pathetic. The political demands (impeachment, 911 investigation) are boring, and the premise of mourning (blank) is phony.

Unions, businesses, whatever. Fuck 'em. Relying on any of these institutions to create anything meaningful is self-defeating and oxymoronic.

In Canada, unions are leading the protest against the SPP expansion of NAFTA - a plan which has driven Mexican farmers off their lands as US corporate agribusiness took over, and which lead to the creation of the dirty, dangerous and exploitive maquiladora zone on the US-Mexican border.

I'm not participating in any general strike that isn't sanctioned by the Teamsters or HERE - Besides, the best way for us to remember that horrible day is to go about our daily routine and not talk about it. The 911 truthers can't pull one over on me - by gawd, on Sept.11th, I'm going to work, sending my kids to school, then going shopping! Maybe later on I'll spend the evening watching TV alone....

Great, another strike/protest that only lasts for a day and then everyone goes back to work; and you guys wonder why nothing ever changes! First you guys need to address the real problem that is “everyone’s being controlled by the almighty dollar bill and that's why their having such a hard time participating in protest action. As long as that’s so, your protests and strikes won’t ever make a difference. The kind if change you’re looking for relies on the full participation of the masses and they don't have the time of day to do that because of their need for money. Your actions aren’t enough to counter act the system. Until we break those chains that enslave us, we will NEVER see an end to all the war and injustice that goes in the world everyday. Just think, every time you walk through that door in the morning to go to work you are counter acting your actions in the street. They don’t say money is the root of all evil for nothin. Our problems with needing money to pay rent is the reason why you guys scratch your heads at the end of the day wondering why the war hasn’t ended. The majority of Americans are awake and don’t like Bush very much but don't have time to do much except vote, garbage in garbage out! As long as things stay the same, were all doomed! Organize a strike that lasts longer than 1 day. Plan 1 year ahead of time. Make sure you get all the Unions and Universities involved and everyone else in the community. Think hard of a way find everybody the time to participate in a week long action and you might get some where. I want change too just as bad! I'm tired of all this shit man! I fuckin hate the way everything is.

I hear a lot of "this won't work" "this is stupid". Is this not the same mentality that keeps the bush administration in power? Stay pessimistic people, Bush loves it. Did you know that after the 3/11 train bombings in Spain everyone took to the streets in a general strike? Guess what happened, the progressive party ended up winning the election and Spain pulled out of Iraq!!! If "liberal" Santa Cruz can't get behind general strike, god help the rest of this country with this task.

Dude, I'm not a pessimist, I'm a realist. The system of control will always prevail at the end of the day with all the Mickey Mouse tactics that are being used to end the war! Businesses will open back up, people will go shopping, and the war will march on. I bet it will be another failed attempt at sticking it to the man just like every other failed attempt. As long as people are enslaved by their jobs I really don't see any hope for the future. Realism is what this is called; be real, it's gonna take a lot more than 1 day and one city to accomplish these goals. You have to wait until you have all the Unions and Universities ready to strike on a given day before you go announcing to the world hay were gonna have a strike. If the event isn't meant to be very big and to last as long as it's takes to bring change there's just no point in wasting the time to show up? I really hate unfinished business if you know what I mean. It's like women getting a guy all excited and then just walking away leaving him there with blue balls. I hope get the point there buddy with out taking things out of context ;)

Those who spend more energy dismissing those who are trying to change things than working to change things are doing more harm than good.

Will a general strike in Santa Cruz stop the war and set off a revolution? Obviously not, but we need all the practice we can get - To sit on your ass on that day and pretend like nothing is wrong is to be silent, and there comes a time when silence becomes betrayal. You gonna sit on your ass and talk shit online on September 11th "messenger"?

by MESSENGER

A revolution can be set off if we just organized one for crying out loud. Don’t you have any faith in that? I already proposed my plan but somehow it didn’t register! If all the anti-war organizations came together to organize a 7 Day National Strike we could really disrupt the war machine but what were doing right now; I really don’t know!

Anti-war organizations would have to make a proposal to all the Unions and Universities in the United States and get them to sign onto a contract that they will strike or walk out when the order is given. READ THIS CAREFULLY: to ensure that this action will be a success the anti-war movement will not carry out this National Strike with out the support of all Unions and Universities necessary.

We have to be that organized. “We can not go at it alone”. Sound familiar; it makes perfect sense! Once we have everybody signed on, THEN will be the appropriate time to begin alerting the masses through means of the internet, word of mouth, flyers on cars, door steps, telephone polls, small awareness meetings and events or even protests demanding the end of the war or else the strike will be carried out.

If we could get them to end the war just using the threat of a strike that would be great but everyone here knows that is very wishful thinking. The streets will have to be filled once the call has been made. Nobody drives in and nobody drives out. If we do not clog the arteries, throw a wrench in the gears, or suffocate the beast how ever you want to put it, the strike won’t be very effective and we won’t have it’s attention.

We want to make the situation so unbearable for the Government that they will have no choice but to give in to our demands which are “stop the war in Iraq so we can focus on other issue here at home”.

We could get them to respect us, fear us, and take us seriously for the first time in a long time. Don’t you want that?

What is your plan for change?

by Buffy
And to think, you're telling those of us who're going on strike on September 11th to take a "reality check"? No, seriously, I'll support that 7 day strike too - But don't forget, when it comes to labor history, there are many, MANY large scale actions leading up to all out uprisings - I like your idea, but people need practice at actions like these, they need real life experiences of taking to the streets on a moments notice instead of sitting in front of a computer and thinking about who sponsored it and whatnot - Remember, whether you agree with their politics or not, Lenin, MLK, and Fidel Castro all spent time in prison before achieving their goals - they were revolutionaries not by theory but by practice. Remember that. See you in the streets on September 11th.

A call for a nationwide general strike next Sept. 11th has some real potential to it -- HOWEVER:

1. A "strike" brought about by capitalists -- like what's being called for here -- has absolutely no oppositional content to it. Capitalists have no overwhelming material incentive to lose business based on appeals from the anti-war lobby to some set of abstract moral principles.

2. And in response to the various clueless proletarians looking for leadership from capital's trade union rent-a-cops; (Teamsters, ad nauseum) to look for unions to act in the interest of union members, let alone the intersts of the wage-earning class as a whole, is as absurd as looking for a Wall Street brokerage house to do this.

Unions are capitalist business organzations -- they have always and always will put the needs of the bosses ahed of the needs of working people. Where do you think all those retired auto plant workers pensions went, anyway?

Doing what your glorious union leaders want you to do is what's gotten you chumps hosed -- pull you heads out of your asses, recognize the reality of the situation and act collectively in your own interests against the scum who run capital's union apparatus.

3. The peaceniks call for a boss -backed "general strike" on 9/11 is a day late and a dollar short. They should give themselves a solid year to spread this idea -- minus the offer of free backrubs to capitalist exploiters from hippie moralists.

The only way something like this can take off is the word of it has enough time to spread far and wide -- and that means that while US foreign policy is certainly a valid triggering mechanism, the idea has to tap into more profound wellsprings of discontentment with contemporary social conditions as well.

It's a good idea in a lot of ways -- but not in the way you've got it packaged here.
