young_girl_with_lanterns.jpg A beautiful and moving, family-friendly event. Sixth annual Japanese-style commemoration of the anniversaries of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic bombings. Decorate lantern shades to be floated, candle-lit, on the lagoon at dusk. Hear Japanese flute and drum music, messages from the mayors of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, and more. Volunteers needed now and the day of the event, particularly drivers with vans/trucks/cars, people with experience coordinating event volunteers, and rowers who can bring their own small rowboats.

Details are at progressiveportal.org/lanterns (including a volunteer sign-up form and flyers to download and distribute). Or leave a message at (510) 595-4626.

Sponsored by the Berkeley City Council, Berkeley Peace and Justice Commission, and numerous community organizations. Free.
