The film: Barrio Cuba dir. Humberto Solás, 2005, Cuba / Spain, 106 min.
Potent emotions and engaging characters are the hallmarks of Barrio Cuba, the latest production from esteemed Humberto Solás (Lucía, Miel para Ochúm). This warmly human portrait of a society desperately seeking upbeat moments in relentlessly downbeat circumstances provides an invaluable cinematic record of a city that appears to be on the verge of collapse. Solás dexterously interweaves the stories of three characters, each striving for a little piece of happiness in La Havana. They never lose the hope of a better future, of regaining a lost love, or finding a new one. Living life to its fullest, they propel themselves against an uncertain fate. Barrio Cuba is the story of fighters whose lives are woven by a mosaic of emotions, at times bitterly confused, but always honest. It is the portrait of a country where preserving dignity is a difficult task, but one worth fighting for. Winner of Audience Award at Huelva Film Festival, Spain
* with English subtitles.
