42 Democrats Support Funding Torture School

by #
On 6/21/07, 42 Democrats voted No on the McGovern Amendment which would have cut off funding to the torture school formerly known as the School of Americas (Assassins), now known as Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation (WHINSEC). 6 more votes were needed to pass it. All Reds and Greens would certainly have voted Yes and that is what makes Reds and Greens viable.

Forty two Democrats did not vote becuase they do not agree with the passing of this amendment and instead of breaking party lines and voting no, they chose to not vote. The move to close WHINSEC has lost all of its momentum since last year's protest at the gates of Fort Benning. After the elections there was a ray of hope that with 35 supporters of the school losing their seat that the time had finally come to close the school down and this year's vote is more damaging that anything that could have happened. The movement also lost a lot of steam thanks to Rep. McGovern's way of handling the vote. Citing outdated information and not recognizing that the SOA closed down years ago and then admitting that he has never (nor has anyone opposed to the school) visited the institute even in an effort to get acquainted with the topic lost him all the credability he had left. Its a sad time for the SOAW and their followers.
