What's in Store for the Middle East?

Friday, June 15, 2007 : Day to Day , June 15, 2007 · Hamas has seized control of Gaza, and Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas is fighting back politically.
Abbas, a moderate and member of Fatah, fired Hamas Prime Minister Ismail Haniya on Friday and replaced him with an independent, Salam Fayyad, who is well-respected in the international community. He is a former Palestinian Authority Finance Minister.

Robert Malley, Middle East and North Africa program director at the International Crisis Group, says this is a setback for the idea of a two-state solution. He predicts that Fatah and Hamas will try to negotiate again.
