HOW TO MOBILIZE A NATION: SUMMER OF LOVE AT 40
David Harris & Joan Blades
In Conversation
The Summer of Love transformed San Francisco into a hot bed of activism with the mantra of peace, love and resistance. Sit-ins, lie-ins, protests and parades caused an entire generation to stand up against the Vietnam War. Protest today is driven by email and web campaigns, blog talk and virtual networks, influencing elections and giving power to the people. Come hear two icons of grassroots activism discuss what it takes to mobilize a nation. David Harris, draft-resister, journalist and husband of Joan Baez, will talk about what it meant to be a part of the Resistance, serve a prison term for dodging the draft and experience the 1960s. Joan Blades, co-founder of MoveOn and MomsRising.org, will discuss online and off line organizing in the internet age as well as activism’s major political successes.
