LaborFest's 13th annual labor culture festival in honor of the 1934 San Francisco General Strike opens, as always, on July 5, the anniversary of "Bloody Thursday" of that strike when 2 workers, Howard Sperry and Nick Bordoise, were murdered by police in the course of their support of a longshore and maritime workers strike. This event triggered the 1934 General Strike which made San Francisco a union town and was one of 3 general strikes that year, the other 2 being in Minneapolis and Toledo, which made possible the passage in 1935 of the Social Security Act and of the Wagner Act, the latter guaranteeing the right to join a union. The opening films are "Big Brother is Watching - The Other Side of Samsung" and "Battle Of Local 5668" Requested donation is $5.
