For one night we turn the GDI Fair Ave railroad tracks location into a hobo jungle for a late-into the night hobo film festival. We will feature train riding shorts, documentaries, and feature films, including:
Free Ride - a charming and engaging documentary about punks and activist youths who ride the rails to hobo gatherings, eco-defense actions, and just for the love of it. Includes a few folks you may have seen around town. Directed by David Murphy.
Long Gone - filmmakers David Eberhardt and Jack Cahill spent seven years riding the rails, asking for spare change and swapping stories around campfires with train hoppers. Their labors are repaid with a mesmerizing documentary full of touching characters and beautiful landscapes. Long Gone poignantly captures a marginalized homeless group for which misconceptions have far too often prevailed and shows that the yearning for community doesn't change much from person to person, even if the definition of community does.
Train on the Brain - filmmaker Alison Murray travels on freight trains across Canada and the US, getting to know a community of train riders, especially the many girls riding the rails. A realistic portrait of the highs and lows of modern hobo life including slow trains, dismal weather, police abuse, and the challenges presented by your traveling companions.
Emperor of the North - drawing inspiration from Jack London's adventures traveling with hobos aboard trains throughout the U.S., this gritty Depression-era drama features outstanding performances from Lee Marvin. Ernest Borgnine is a cruel railroad agent who makes it his personal mission to rid the world of hobos out for a free ride.
And more...
PLUS subversive shorts, a hobo jungle in the urban wasteland, and great company.
BRING food and drink to share, your hobo stories, your bedroll, blankets, pillows, friends. Donations are greatly appreciated and directly support the project.
SANTA CRUZ GUERILLA DRIVE-IN is an outdoor movie theater under the stars that springs up in the fields and industrial wastelands. Beyond showing great movies and bringing a broad community together, part of our mission is helping reclaim public space and transforming our urban environment into a joyful playground.
