War profiteer shut down--picketing to continue

by Daniel
A victory in the Port! War profiteer SSA was shut down this morning by our community picket line. Picketing will continue this afternoon. Join the picket line!

SATURDAY, MAY 19: Longshoremen honored a community picket line this morning at the SSA Terminal in the Port of Oakland. Three ships are now sitting at the SSA docks, and cargo is NOT moving today. Our picket line will resume this evening to meet the next shift of dock workers.

Join this afternoon's picket line! We'll meet at the West Oakland BART station at 4 p.m. From there we'll shuttle to the SSA Terminal in the Port.

SSA (Stevedoring Services of America) has profited in an ugly way from the war in Iraq. And, it was at the gates of SSA that peaceful protesters were attacked by police on April 7, 2003.

THEMES & ISSUES
Stop the shipping of war materiel to Iraq
Bring the troops home now, and give them the healthcare they need
Port money for schools and social services

Another wasted effort. I guess no one really cares about the truth as long as they can "take action". What was gained by the pickets? Nothing. While everyone was shutting down the so-called war profiteer SSA, on the other side of the Port Maersk quietly loaded thier ship. Big deal you say? Not really since they are the ones with the big military contracts. Who loads the cargo at the Concord weapons stations? SSA you say?? Nope. It's another stevedoring company. How many Eagle Marine logos were seen at SSA? Probably not many since Eagle Marine and SSA are competitors. Last I checked, the Port Commissioners are the ones who decide how Port funds are used, not the terminal companies.

All you did was delay a couple of ships an extra day, none of which carry military cargo. The only people hurt are the workers who lost a days pay. I thought our teachers were better than this. Knew how to find out the truth. Sure hope they don't teach my kids.

The misguided efforts of the few waste the enthusiam and good intentions of the many. The blind leading the blind and all that crap. Bravo!

Whenever there's a successful action, you can almost bet on somebody dissing it. The dissers often present themselves as super revolutionaries, but I've often wondered who those anonymous persons really are. Cointelpro types? Company PR persons? Or could it be embittered Walter Middys--wannabes who secretly dream of leading up to the barricades where they will be the glorious leader-heroes?

If stopping a business is all that is needed to claim victory, then congratulations on your big day. You were indeed successful.

I'm just a citizen concerned about the current (misguided) direction of our governement and ran across this site. I like to think for myself so I did some basic research on the claims used as the foundation for this action. If others were to do the same, they would understand my comments. In the end, the facts do not support the claims.

Maybe the organizer(s) of this action are the true 'super revolutionaries'. Protest for a cause, any cause. Who cares if it true as long as it sounds good and plays to the media.

The Successful Picket at the Port of Oakland - What It Means For the Longer Term Struggle Against the War and For Funding Our Needs At Home.

Sunday, June 10th
5:00 - 6:30 PM

On May 19 the group Port Action picketed war profiteer SSA at the
Port of Oakland, demanding a stop to war shipments and Port money for
schools and social services. In a significant act of solidarity, the
ILWU refused to cross the picket lines, not once, but twice (morning
and night shifts), resulting in a important victory for the people!

This successful direct action to stop the war and fund people's needs
was organized by a coalition which had as prominent members the
Oakland Green Party, the Oakland Education Association, and
Committees of Correspondence for Democracy and Socialism. The Green
Sunday for June 10 will focus on this event. Two of the leaders,
Green Party members Jonathan Nack and Larry Shoup, will discuss the
event and what it might mean for the longer term struggle against the
war and for funding people's needs here at home.

Please come and bring your questions because, as always, our speakers
will be interested in a dialogue.

Beverages and snacks will be provided.
