Hurricane Katrina revealed massive deficiencies in the government’s ability to respond to natural disasters. But the seeds of the disaster in the Gulf Coast were sowed by decades of racist and oppressive social neglect that left levees, public health, and housing systems in shambles. What happened in New Orleans could happen anywhere. Are we prepared to face the next major disaster in the Bay Area?

As climate change brings on unprecedented natural disasters there remains no reliable public system to protect ourselves in times of disaster. We are seeing more clearly communities gragmenting in the face of gentrification and the dangers associated with our dependence on a fragile centralized system. The government funds war and tax breaks for the rich, and de-funds the programs we need to survive. Can we stand in solidarity with threatened communities now so that when disaster hits no one will be left to starve on their rooftops? The time is now to protect ourselves.

It is possible for individuals to acquire life skills needed to survive natural disasters, and to live healthier lives in general. What the government refuses to do, we can. We all need to come alive and recognize our collective healing potential; the need is urgent.

The skills and knowledge from this 8 hour work shop are meant to empower and inspire us to organize throughout our communities. Instructors will draw upon our experiences as health care advocates & practitioners, street medics, & volunteers at Common Ground Health Clinic in New Orleans. $70.00 If you can't afford it let us know and we can work something out. No one turned away. (Proceeds will go to the Ohlone Center of Herbal Studies) RSVP. Class may fill up!
