Birdseye: Onizuka AFB, satellite operation facility
The Onizuka Air Force Station, operated by the National Reconnaissance Office at Moffett Field in Sunnyvale was decommissioned this week after 46 years of operation. http://www.schriever.af.mil/news/story.asp?id=123050054
The only military base in the immediate San Francisco Bay area, up to 1200 staff were employed in the 'Blue Cube' during the peak era of activity. With decommissioning, the remote sensing and spy satellite operations carried out here since the 1950s have been transferred to other stations. Most of the dozens of satellites launched from the 1960s through 2000s were developed by Lockheed Martin, which Onizuka AFB is located adjacent to. Other satellite control operations take place at Schriever Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, and remote tracking stations are located in Vandenburg AFB, in Greenland, New Boston, Hawaii, England, Guam, and Diego Garcia Island in the Indian Ocean

The large blue building called the Blue Cube is a well known feature in Sunnyvale at the edge of Moffett Field and close to I237 freeway. Many theorized that this specific facility, rather than the other defense contractors scattered around the South Bay, would have been a first target in the case of nuclear war with the USSR, North Korea, or Cuba.

The National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) coordinates collection of satellite and aircraft information by military and CIA equipment. It generates intelligence for the National Security agency (NSA), the National Geospatial Intelligence Agency (NGA), the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency(DIA), the U.S. Strategic Command, and Naval Research Laboratory. The NRO is currently developing a new wave of spy satellites which can photograph targets through darkness and cloud cover, with a $25 billion contract through Raytheon and Boeing, and is being shifted away from Lockheed in Sunnyvale.
