Virginia Tech Shootings
Are psychiatrists/teachers really to blame for the violence?
I am a student at UCSC, and was shocked to hear about the recent shootings at Virginia Tech. I am however extremely frustrated with recent news reports blaming certain teachers and psychological institutions for supposedly ignoring something that was completely out of their control. As far as I know, there is and can be no clear psychological profile for a student that will take a gun into a classroom of peers and open fire. I think instead of blaming something like an inadequate number of psychiatrists on campus, we as a society need to look at the larger structure of US education, and the incredible amount of pressure and stress students are required to deal with. I think many students my age would agree with the fact that a university is a place of great social, financial, and academic pressure. I am not trying to justify the actions that took place at Virginia Tech, but think that this type of violence could increase if the education system in this country continues to suffer. At UCSC we are required to “learn” the subject material from each class in the space of just ten weeks. That fact alone is enough to stress me out.
