NEW COLLEGE OF CALIFORNIA
TUESDAY, MARCH 2OTH

1:30-3pm The Take, a film about worker seizure of abandoned workplaces and factories will precede the teach-in at 1:30 pm in Room 4 of 777 Valencia Street.

3-5pm “CREATING CHANGE WITHOUT SEIZING POWER: THE LESSON OF HORIZONTALISM IN ARGENTINA” with Marina Sitrin author of Horizontalism: Voices of Popular Power in Argentina (Location NC Theatre)
After IMF policies led to economic meltdown in Argentina, millions of workers and the unemployed poured into the streets to protest. The social movements that exploded in Argentina that December not only transformed the fabric of Argentine society, but also highlighted the possibility of a genuinely democratic alternative to global capital. Author Marina Sitrin discusses her three years collecting an oral history of these movements. This event is co-sponsored by the Weekday Humanities Critical Frameworks and Spiritual Activism Classes.
Marina Sitrin is a dreamer, teacher, student, and militant. She is the editor of Horizontalism: Voices of Popular Power in Argentina, an oral history of the autonomous social movements in Argentina. (Spanish edition Chilavert 2005, English edition AK Press 2006) Marina has traveled extensively in Latin America, spending time with the various new social movements. She is currently writing and editing a book entitled: Insurgent Democracies: Latin America’s New Powers (City Lights Press 2007) Marina teaches part time at the Gallatin School of New York University.
Horizontalism: Voices of Popular Power in Argentina is an oral history of the autonomous social movements in Argentina since the popular rebellion in 2001. It reflects the voices of many dozens of people who are recreating their lives and communities using horizontal forms of social organization. These movements range from occupied and recuperated factories, arts and independent media collectives, indigenous communities, neighborhood assemblies, feminist and queer groups and unemployed workers movements. The book tries to show, in people’s own voices, that we can change our worlds, we are changing our worlds, and we can do so with love, trust, real democracy, horizontalism in this case, and autonomy.
