until this issue (Item #18) is called to attention.

It is a simple question of Zoning.

Do we want Private or Public ?

Commercial or Educational ?

Short term or Long Term ?

Benefit for a Few (UC Regents) or Benefit of an Entire Population (The Whole Bay Area and Its Historic Legacy of Education and Culture) ?

The UC Regents have proposed: to change the zoning from Education (Public) to Mixed Use (Commercial/Residential…Private). Their plan includes destruction of the awesome architecture and artistry, displacement of thousands of local students, and replacing an education center with luxury lofts and commercial enterprises for the sole purpose of reaping profits from privatized land.

An alternative: Keep the Educational Zoning to carry on the site’s 150-plus years of public use and allow organizations like New College (who believe in Education as a mode of social well-being and equality) to pick up where UC Berkley left off; continually leaning toward a better society by cultivating healthy, vibrant, cultural expressions and applied knowledge.

Please attend the Rally and Public Hearing. Please sign the petition for a Citizen’s Advisory Committee http://www.petitiononline.com/UCBEsite/petition.html.

Please keep your eyes open for future developments. For more info: 415.282.7197
