As support for the war is falling to all time lows and anti-war activists are gearing up for the March 17 and 18th protests, a growing number of soldiers are speaking out, refusing to serve in Iraq and refusing to redeploy for second, third and fourth tours. The first officer, Lieutenant Ehren Watada, has refused to go on his tour to Iraq because he believes the war is illegal. A year ago a Zogby poll found that 72 percent of troops surveyed thought the U.S. should withdrawal within the year. In January, over 1,200 soldiers signed on to an Appeal for Redress, which allowed active duty soldiers an opportunity to express their support for rapid withdrawal. But instead of withdrawing troops, President Bush has gone forward with a 'surge' plan that two-thirds of people oppose including active duty soldiers. This escalation is already causing the deaths of more and more Iraqis and U.S. soldiers. The question on many people's minds is 'how do we end the war'? During the American war on Vietnam, the soldiers resistance and their heroic refusals to fight and carry out missions played a major role in ending the war. Come to this meeting to discuss how we can support these courageous soldiers and build a movement to bring the troops home now!
