WYLDE BUNCH shares their music and story with live concert performance at inner-city Oakla

by Scott Seine
WYLDE BUNCH, an 11-piece hip-hop band hailing from South Central Los Angeles performed last Friday (March 2, 2007) for 600 inner-city students at Havenscourt Middle School in East Oakland, encouraging the kids to "stay in school, and follow your dreams." Wylde Bunch understands what it’s like growing up in a city surrounded by social ills and gang culture, and turning to the power of music as a means to avoid the violence is a message they want to convey to under-privileged at-risk youths everywhere.

WYLDE BUNCH shares their music and story with live concert performance at inner-city Oakland Middle School

Oakland, CA – March 5, 2007 --
WYLDE BUNCH, an 11-piece hip-hop band hailing from South Central Los Angeles performed last Friday (March 2, 2007) for 600 inner-city students at Havenscourt Middle School in East Oakland, encouraging the kids to "stay in school, and follow your dreams." Wylde Bunch understands what it’s like growing up in a city surrounded by social ills and gang culture, and turning to the power of music as a means to avoid the violence is a message they want to convey to under-privileged at-risk youths everywhere. Band leader Dame shared their story, speaking about how it was the teachers that changed his life and saw something special in him. His message to the students was "Never let anyone tell you you can't. Follow your passion and dreams. Start now.” Giving back to the community is of utmost importance to the band.

The Havenscourt District Supervisor, David Montes de Oca, commented, "Students here have spent years being unnoticed, and never celebrated. Today was a shining example of the difference a little special attention can make." Students and teachers were dancing in the aisles and once kids were excused back to class, students remained on stage talking to band members about their own dreams and a few even sang an original song or two with the band. Students later said this was the most fun they'd had all year and one was quoted as saying to Dame, "I want to start a band one day. And not just any band, one that has jazz and rock and hip hop too!"

WYLDE BUNCH most recently wrote and performed the theme to this season’s NBA telecasts on ESPN, and their song YEAH YEAH (STOMP THE BLEACHERS) was the anthem this past fall on all nationally televised FOX Sports Net college football games.

With influences ranging from Sly & The Family Stone and Outkast to Green Day and Led Zeppelin, these South Central Los Angeles natives are pioneering a distinctive sound, infusing funk, soul, and rock, within an incredible hip-hop center. The lineup consists of three emcees, bass, drums, guitar, keyboards, a female trumpet player (who also emcees), sax, trombone, and two background singers.

Best known for their energetic live shows, the band has shared the stage with the likes of Common, O.A.R and have toured with the Black Eyed Peas. In addition to recently being heard on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS, WILD HOGS, ESPN, and FOX Sports, their music is featured on such hugely popular video games as MLB 2007, Madden 2005, and NBA Live.

WYLDE BUNCH are currently in the studio recording new songs and will also spend significant time on the road prior to releasing a full length album on Surfdog Records later this year.
