We are entering a critical time in world history where what we do over the next few months will have a major impact on whether or not the government's program of endless and ever-expanding war will be halted and the whole tyrannical program of the Bush administration reversed. The extremely heavy situation in Iraq means opportunities for a major political shift in this country. We cannot let this moment pass by without intense struggle for the hearts and minds of millions.
With the recent announcement of a troop increase of 20,000 in Iraq within one week of the start of the new democratic congress, many are awaking to the need for action and resistance to flow from the people. The approval rating of the war and the president are at an all time low, but without visible, sustained resistance--of the magnitude that was seen during the 60s--this outrage will have no effect.
Students have a primary role in all of this. They must be the leading edge of this movement. We must take responsibility for stepping forward, righteously, and calling on the youth who will inherit the legacy of this regime. Already, students at UC Santa Barbara have heard the call and are planning a strike for February 15th.
On Thursday, February 1st, meetings will be held on campuses all over the country with the aims of uniting political groups, student organizations, and conscious individuals and to make plans for the coming period. What kind of action is commensurate with these times? What should our role be in catalyzing political ferment on thecampuses? We sincerely hope your group or a representative can join us for this important meeting held in 229 Dwinelle at 6:00 this Thursday.
