Iraq war opponents hold Saturday protest
in conjunction with massive rallies in DC, SF;
Rep. Matsui continues to be target of ‘peace-in'

SACRAMENTO – Opponents of the Iraq War – in conjunction with massive
protests Saturday in Washington DC, San Francisco and other US cities –
will hold a demonstration at Arden Fair Mall (Arden & Heritage) SATURDAY,
from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

At the Washington DC rally speakers include Jan Fonda, Susan Sarandon, Tim
Robbins, Danny Glover and members of Congress, including Reps Dennis
Kucinich, Lyn Woolsey and Maxine Waters, who are among the few Democrats to
work to end the war now.

But, in Sacramento, the Coalition to End the War Friday wrapped up its 14th
straight day of a "peace-in" in the Sacramento District Office of Rep.
Doris Matsui. Hundreds of constituents have participated in the vigil to
convince Matsui to agree to vote against any new funding for the war beyond
the $70 billion already budgeted.

The coalition, which includes veterans, religious and community groups,
said the "peace-in" will continue at Matsui's office on Monday.

Rep. Matsui has said – like many Democratic lawmakers, who now hold the
majority in Congress – that she will not agree to restrict funding to end
the war, even though she claims she is opposed to the war and Congress'
constitutional power to end it is in the control of the "purse strings."

"At least 27 Americans died (last weekend) in the war. Every day Rep.
Matsui insists on playing politics, and making this a partisan debate, is
another day our troops are at risk. She says she is opposed to the war. We
want her to do something about it," said Coalition spokesperson and
Veterans for Peace local president George Main.
