By Kitsap Sun Staff
January 19, 2007

The Bremerton-based aircraft carrier USS John C. Stennis has united with its strike group in San Diego and will depart for the Arabian Gulf on Saturday morning.

The giant flattop arrived at Naval Base Coronado early today, according to a Navy announcement, and will leave the port with its embarked air wing, the guided missile cruiser USS Antietem and guided missile destroyer USS Preble.

The Stennis Strike Group will now sail west to enter the 5th Fleet's area of operation to provide support for allied forces in that region.

"We will support Operation Iraqi Freedom, Enduring Freedom, the Horn of Africa and maritime security operations with the purpose to provide regional and global stability," said Rear Adm. Kevin Quinn in a news release. "We've been preparing for this deployment for more than one year -- we have trained and trained so that we are completely combat ready."

Sailing and motorboating for peace and open dialoque.
