Centering on the question of how art can continually position itself within our geopolitical situation, the idea of public sphere becomes quintessential to creative activity. The spring program of public lectures by visiting artists and scholars at SFAI will investigate the key art world and societal debates of our current moment.

Hou Hanru
“Inaugural Lecture”

Hou Hanru is SFAI’s Director of Exhibitions and Public Programs, and Chair of the Exhibitions and Museum Studies program. A dynamic and innovative curator and critic of contemporary art, he was recently named artistic director of the 2007 Istanbul Biennial. Hou most recently served as the artistic director of the 2nd Guangzhou Triennale where he co-curated Beyond: An Extraordinary Space of Experimentation for Modernization with Hans Ulrich Obrist and Guo Xiaoyan. Other recent curatorial projects include Go Inside, the 3rd Tirana Biennale (Tirana, Albania, 2005), Out of Sight, organized by the De Appel Foundation (Amsterdam, Netherlands, 2005), Nuit Blanche 2004 (Paris, 2004), and A l’Ouest du Sud de l’Est /
A l’Est du Sud de l’Ouest (Villa Arson, Nice, 2004).
