January 27th Protests in SF and Washington DC Say, Troops Home Now
"Act Now to End the War," Says UFPJ in Advance of January 27th Demo
Updated coverage of these protests
United for Peace and Justice has called for a massive mobilization in Washington, DC for Saturday, January 27th. There will be local protests in Sacramento, Fresno, San Jose, and other locations. The San Francisco Rally and March to End the War in Iraq will gather at 12pm at Powell and Market. The rally and march will include a number of labor contingents. The march will go past Pier 31/33 to support IBU-ILWU/MMP workers who are under attack by Terry MacCrae and Hornblower Tours. In Washington, DC, protesters plan to assemble on the east end of the National Mall, the end closest to the Capitol, from 11am to 1pm, and to march around the Capitol until 4pm. KPFA radio will be providing live coverage of the DC protest from 10am to 12pm (west coast time).
UFPJ wants to have a huge turnout in order to send the strongest, clearest message to the new Congress, with the goal of at least one person from each of the 435 Congressional districts marching on January 27th to "help represent the truly nationwide peace majority." UFPJ also wants people to sign up to be local coordinators for people travelling from their areas to Washington, DC. The website includes links to ride and housing boards.
UFPJ has also planned a Lobby Day: On Monday, January 29th, volunteers and staff will meet with members of Congress and/or their aides. A training for the Lobby Day will be held on Sunday, January 28th. Read more
