Berkeley Public Library has installed Radiofrequency Identification (RFID)tags in all its materials at a cost of over $2.5 million so far. Hours are still limited and the library is understaffed.
A new director is being chosen in a very controlled manner with next to no public input. The last director left a few months ago after
she had installed this RFID system also with no public input.
We have paid for this surveillance equipment and will continue to pay for it until it has been removed.
Our aim is to have the RFID system taken out of the Berkeley libraries and to have the Board of Library Trustees become more accountable to the public. They do not come to us to find out what we need. They make decisions without consulting us and seem to resent the participation of the public.
