Prop 85 Defeated
The Campaign for Real Teen Safety is delighted that California voters rejected Prop 85 and protected the health and safety of our teenagers. California has always been a pro-choice state and the voters saw through this deceptive initiative and said NO to placing our teens in danger. This vote guarantees that all teens, even those from abusive homes, will be able to access qualified doctors, nurses and counselors when they need them.
Thanks to our broad coalition of doctors, nurses, teachers, labor, clergy and civil rights organizations we were able to educate voters about this deceptive and dangerous initiative. Our opponents brought this measure back despite voter rejection just last year. We just built a bigger, stronger coalition and defeated it AGAIN.
The real answer to teen pregnancy is family communication and comprehensive, age appropriate sex education including abstinence. In California we’ve lowered the teen pregnancy rate by 46% through education and information. We must all work to continue that trend.

I am sickened that even you people would say that you are delighted that this bill did not pass. How is killing babies protecting the health & safety of our teenagers? You realize that ANYONE could take YOUR daugher for an abortion of YOUR grandchild? Doesn't that concern you? Kids can get a baby sucked out of them but can't get their ears pierced w/out parental permission? Does that REALLY make sense to you? If it does..then you need serious prayer! What is wrong w/you people!!!!????????
I'm sure gald you are "delighted". I hope it happens to your kid and you don't know.
why arent your kids talking to you? Are you so without emotional resources that you have to ask the GOVERNMENT to handle your personal affairs? They are (after all) your children.
The question isn't "why can they get an abortion you don't know about". It's why aren't they talking to you in the first place?
It's your responsibility to build a family dynamic in which your kids can talk to you and in which communication is an ongoing tradition. If this isn't happening, IT"S YOUR FAULT!
Wake up. And take some responsibility for the family dynamic you have.

I am tired of hearing about teens who are afraid to talk to their parents, so therefore, parents should not know about something that could possibly result in tragedy. We as a society, do not allow minors to enter contracts, drive, get ears pierced, or go on a school sponsored field trips without parental permission-- so why do we allow teenagers to decide something that could result in their own bodily harm, without a parent even knowing about it? What teen doesn't want their parent(s) to know they received a "D" on a report card? Would that girl be afraid to come home with a below average grade? In that case, in fear of parental retribution, should the schools not send home report cards? This notion is ridiculous. I am offended by the ads that presume that persons such as myself need to "think out of my bubble." The authors of this measure need to think out of their box and realize that parents' are responsible for their children and need support to properly care for them...not roadblocks.

DO YOU KNOW THAT MORE WOMEN DIE FROM CHILDBIRTH EVERY YEAR THAN FROM ABORTIONS? That is a statistic that I have posted to this site many times. Look it up in google, maternal death rate and death rate from abortion. Do you know that teen moms' kids have more health risks than kids born to slightly older moms- they have more low birth weight, for example?
So really, it sounds more like giving birth would be the tragedy. Raising an unwanted child, (and the young woman either dropping out of school or missing out on activities that kids her age usually do-- or her parents having to raise another kid just when they were looking forward to an "empty nest") could also be a great tragedy - especially if, due to her age and bitterness, the young woman were to abuse her child.

Do you want more involvement withyour kids? Fine. Fund state or community inititives that support that. Prop. 85 did NOTHING to encourgage parental involvment. All it proposed was simple notification. Big difference
Did you want to begin the process of eroding support for Roe v Wade? If so, you were turned down flat.
I am all in favour of anything that supports communication. And I don't think that simple notification achieves that.
