Battle for Democracy in District 6

DISTRICT 6 SUPERVISOR CHRIS DALY IS RUNNING FOR RE-ELECTION ON A PROGRESSIVE PLATFORM AND HAS THE TRACK RECORD TO PROVE IT. TED GULLICKSON EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE SAN FRANCISCO TENANTS UNION SAYS THE TENANTS RIGHTS ADVOCACY GROUP HAS ENDORSED DALY BECAUSE HE SUPPORTS SMART DEVELOPMENT , TENANTS RIGHTS, AND THE LOW INCOME RESIDENTS OF DISTRICT 06.

“District 6 is probably the most progressive district in the city . It’s about 90% renter and its lower income than most other districts, so it’s working class, it’s people who are struggling to get by struggling to find housing , struggling to find work In Chris they find someone who supports minimum wage laws, supports rent control supports paid sick leave supports workers rights, tenants rights. Those are the issues that people who live in District 6 are concerned about and it’s the corporations that work in District 6 that are frustrated they have to deal with Chris Daly.”

DALY IS ALSO ENDORSED BY THE SAN FRANCISCO DEMOCRATIC PARTY, SEIU, the LEAGUE OF CONSERVATION VOTERS, THE DEPUTY SHERIFFS ASSOCIATION, SAN FRANCISCO FIREFIGHTERS AND THE SAN FRANCISCO BAY GUARDIAN. SUPERVISOR CHIRS DALY ON HIS TRACK RECORD.

“My big issues have been affordable housing, protecting services for the most vulnerable among us. At Rincon Hill we approved several thousand units of housing and we reached an unprecedented Community Benefits Package of 120 million dollars to build affordable housing, to do eviction prevention, to invest in small businesses, to invest in the arts in the neighborhood. I was happy to be a part of the historic legislation to extend universal health coverage to all San Franciscans, which is currently being implemented. I’ve also been a friend to the environment, I’ve been strong on transportation issues and rent control issues; I’m a bread and butter progressive.”

DALY HAS 5 CHALLENGERS, BUT ROB BLACK MAY BE THE STRONGEST. WITH ENDORSEMENTS BY MAYOR GAVIN NEWSOM AND DOWN TOWN BUSINESS INTERESTS DALY HAS BATTLED WITH SINCE HIS ELECTION TO THE BOARD IN 2000. KEN CLEAVELAND DIRECTOR OF PUBLIC AFFAIRS FOR BOMA, THE BUILDING OWNERS AND MANAGERS ASSOCIATION SAYS THE LANDLORD AND PROPERTY OWNERS ADVOCATES ENDORSE BLACK, FOR HIS WILLINGNESS TO WORK WITH THE BUSINESS COMMUNITY.

“I think Rob is going to be much more of a collaborative supervisor working in concert with all parties in government and in the community, including the business community. You look at Chris Daly’s attitude toward the business community. It has been one of only seeing corporations and companies and businesses as fat cows to be taxed. Now, he’ll say that he’s working with the Rincon Hill developers, but he’s doing it in a way that borders on extortion. He’s basically said you don’t kiss my ring, you don’t get to do business in this district. This particular business association and I think the business community in general believes that we need a more balanced supervisor representing District 6.”
BLACK, WHO DALY DESCRIBES AS ANTI-TENANT, IS ALSO ENDORSED BY THE TENANCY IN COMMON OR TIC COALITION, SMALL BUSINESS LEADERS, THE SAN FRANCISCO POLICE OFFICERS ASSOCIATION, THE SAN FRANCISCO EXAMINER AND SAN FRANCISCO SAVE OUR STREETS OR SFSOS. ROB BLACK ON THE ISSUES IN DISTRICT 6.

“SF deserves leadership that is going to bring everyone to the table, that everybody gets to participate in the conversation and that’s the type of leaders ship I want to bring to the board of supervisors. If we’re not careful San Francisco will become a tale of two cities. Rich and poor. 30% of the crime in this city takes place in District 6. We have two and half times more crime in this one district than in all of the other 11 districts. A lot of that crime take place in some of our poorest neighborhoods. We need more officers literally walking the beat, beat cops in the tenderloin.”

DALY IS ALSO A SUPPORTER OF FOOT PATROLS AND SUPPORTS PROPOSITION H, THAT WOULD INCREASE THE PAYMENT RENTERS RECEIVE FROM LANDLORDS FOR NO FAULT EVICTIONS SUCH AS THOSE UNDER THE ELLIS ACT OR FROM BUILDING DEMOLITIONS; BLACK OPPOSES IT. BLACK SAYS HE SUPPORTS TENANTS RIGHTS BUT NOT PROP H. HE’D LIKE TO EXPLORE OTHER WAYS TO INCREASE HOME OWNERSHIP FOR WORKING FAMILIES IN SAN FRANCISCO, SUCH AS LIMITED EQUITY BUY-INS AND COOPERATIVES. MEANWHILE, THE SAN FRANCISCO ETHICS COMMISSION IS INVESTIGATING THE FUNDING OF FLIERS, MAILERS AND SIGNS ENDORSING BLACK AND ATTACKING DALY IN DISTRICT 6. JOHN ST. CROIX, (SAINT CROY) EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF THE COMMISSION ESTIMATES THAT OVER 30,000 DOLLARS IN CAMPAIGN CONTRIBUTIONS HAVE GONE UNREPORTED.

“In the form of door hangers, in the form of signage, in the form of leaflets, pamphlets, and other printed communications, things that were left on windshields of cars. There are staff times involved, there are websites, there’s some polling going on and a lot of this stuff isn’t being reported. So we don’t know who is actually responsible for a number of the materials. A great deal of anti Daly literature mentions other candidates as an alternatives, such as Matthew Drake and Rob Black.”

“The allegations are completely unfounded and meant to distract people from the actual positions and the actual behavior of the incumbent supervisor Chris Daly in this case. Remember that he continues to be the number one enemy of Mayor Newsom on the board of supervisors. He opposed Care Not Cash and continues to oppose Care Not Cash, he opposed the ban on aggressive panhandling and he’s been the Supervisor for 6 years.”

“It’s apparent that downtown business interests funded by prominent republican’s like Don Fisher with the participation of even war profiteering corporations want to buy the little district 6 supervisor seat. And in a city like San Francisco that prides itself ob being a progressive city, prides itself on our democracy, in doing things differently from the Carl Rove, George Bush, Dick Cheney sort of way, it would be unfortunate if we let them buy this seat.”
