!Zapatista! Making Another World Possible!
Author of "Zapatistas! Making Another World Possible; 2000-2006" will be at Northtown Books in Arcata. Chance for community to dialogue about solidarity response to police military violence in Oaxaca, how we can all make that other world possible..
John Ross, author of "Zapatistas!" will be at Northtown Books, 957 H Street in Arcata on Friday, Nov. 3rd beginning at 7:30 PM. To have a world were many worlds are possible is the long range goal of the Zapatistas, based on autonomy, concensus, human rights and ecoawareness (amor para Madre Tierra), etc.. This free public event provides the community of Arcata a window into making the Zapatistas world one step closer towards reality. People can dialogue on showing solidarity with indigenous autonomy in the states of Chiapas, Oaxaca, etc.. when people are confronted with police oppression..

Since people living in the far north of CA may not be able to transport themselves to the nearest Mexican Embassy, writing letters can also help. Even a few people or individuals can hold spontaneous protests with visible signs in rural communities along major highways like the 101..
Let's flood the Mexican Embassy with letters demanding an end to the police violence against the people of Oaxaca. Here's a copy of my letter sent off to the Mexican Consulate in Sacramento;
To Mexican Embassy;
It is of upmost importance that the police and military violence against
the people of Oaxaca stop immediately. The human rights violations
committed by the Mexican government's police against the people of Oaxaca
are criminal acts and will not be forgotten. Here in the U.S. many people
are expressing solidarity with the people of Oaxaca by publicly
protesting. We will continue to escalate tactics here in the U.S. as long
as the police violence in Oaxaca continues. We are planning long term
occupations of the Mexican consulates in the U.S. and highway shut-downs
to show solidarity with the people of Oaxaca. When the Mexican police and
military show signs of becoming less violent towards Oaxacans, then we
will correspond. The decisions made by your government are directly
responsible for what happens in the U.S. and elsewhere.
The removal of the criminal politician Ulises Ruiz from public office in
Oaxaca will also help reduce the violence between APPO and police that
results in Oaxacan deaths and injuries. These demands are realistic and we
predict a return to relative peace in Oaxaca if these demands are met.
Ulises Ruiz needs to face the reality of his criminal actions and step
down from office willingly or be forcibly removed by popular demand.
As a former tourist to Oaxaca, am looking forward to returning and
visiting my favorite destinations along the pristine Pacific coastal
ecosystem and the Sierra Madre mountains. The people of Oaxaca are my
extended familia and i will do what is needed to protect them from harm.
My reasons for choosing Oaxaca over other Mexican destinations is that
Oaxaca's ecosystem remains unspoiled by corporate developments and
Oaxacans maintain a network of healthy indigenous community autonomy. As a
U.S. resident, visiting the Oaxacan community is a valuable learning
experience of how people can live harmoniously with one another and the
ecosystem (Madre Tierra).
However, police and military violence against APPO and other Oaxacans will
not help restore the ecotourist industry anytime soon. Providing Oaxacans
with enough free space without police interference to organize autonomous
communities that practice human rights and support ecologically friendly
businesses will indeed improve the potential for a symbiotically healthy
ecotourist economy where everyone benefits.
Thank you for your time,
Mark Miller
