World Can't Wait--Drive Out the Bush Regime Emergency Teach-Ins:
"It's Worse Than You Think; The World Can Not Wait till 2008"

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
San Francisco, CA (worldcantwait.net) October 31, 2006 – Emergency
Teach-ins will take place on UC Berkeley and San Francisco State
University campuses on Wednesday and Thursday of this week, sponsored
by UCB and SF State Student Chapters of the World Can't Wait-Drive Out
the Bush Regime and the Bush Crimes Commission.

Locations:
UC Berkeley: Wednesday, November 1, 7 pm
Mulford Hall, Rm. 145, UC Berkeley

San Francisco State: Thursday, November 2, 6 pm
Science Building, Room 210

Speakers:
CARLOS MAURICIO: Internationally known spokesman for the Stop Impunity
Project, a torture survivor group. "The situation is this: The USA
government, the administration, knows that fear works very well.
Torture works very well as a means of repression. The USA government
right now has played many cards to bring fears in the United States.
On of them is the threat of terrorism, which can be real or not. The
point is, torture is not for gathering information. Torture is to
bring fear to the people."

LARRY EVEREST (UC Berkeley event only): Journalist and author of Oil,
Power, and Empire: Iraq and the U.S. Global Agenda. "There is no 'war
on terror.' The invasion and occupation of Iraq are not part of a 'war
on terror'…What does exist is a horrific and criminal U.S. war of
terror against the people of the world for greater empire."

ROBERT HARMON: Representing the National Lawyers' Guild Military Law
Task Force, for which he served as a law intern in matters of military
and wartime law, including important research on military commission
trials.

Debra Sweet, National Coordinator of World Can't Wait talking about
the purpose of these events said "The very nature of U.S. society and
its relationship to other countries is being reshaped in horrific ways
before our eyes. Yet the full implications of these sweeping changes
are not widely understood, even among those who oppose the Bush
administration. The administration systematically lies about its
actions and agenda, while the major media and Democrats allow it to
frame the overall discussion. As a result, the most crucial issues are
not discussed truthfully either in the public arena or in election
campaigns. This is a major reason why public resistance to Bush's
outrages is nowhere near what is urgently needed. The teach-ins are
aimed at changing this situation."
