After arriving at the new Humanities Building at Cowell College and holding a Community Speak-Out for a while, the protesters rushed over to try and prevent the Regents from getting off a bus and sneaking in through a back door.

For a second there, I thought we might have a repeat of the 1968 UCSC protest of the UC Regents. Photo on the right from Covello and Covello (see: http://www.santacruzsentinel.com/extra/century/61/index.html)

All the doors of the building were blocked except this one, which had a group of people with linked arms surrounding it. Alan Pagano, the Superintendent of the Santa Cruz City School District and some guy from the Chamber of Commerce tried to get out. The crowd wasn't hearing it though. Maybe they thought they were Regents.. maybe it didn't matter.

One of the many blocked doors. As mentioned earlier, only the main door where the cops were stationed wasn't completely controlled by students. So 4 of 5 doors were inaccessable for a few hours, with the last being a site of frequent tension.

This student was grabbed and dragged a bit by some cops, then some other students pulled him back. I guess it's illustrative of the tug-of-war between cops and protesters that happened for a good hour. But the actual incident itself wasn't a key part of the day.

Here's the beginning of all the ruckus. The police targetted an activist here - good 'ol Steve on the ground there. His friends tried to get him back, but in the process the cops snagged 2 more people - Alette and Tani.

The students are still trying to get at their friends who were grabbed. The cops, who are getting anxious now, pull out their pepper-spray in about 1 second, before slamming the door shut.

35 cops from the City of Santa Cruz and the County Sherrif's office arrive in the Stevenson parking lot. I go down there to take some friendly photos of 'em, and I get the big guy in the middle there (the one with no hair), telling me that if I take one more photo, he'll take my camera as evidence. The whole area's off limits, he says. I didn't see any signs.

Keep in mind that the deal they made was eventually approved by consensus by all the student demonstrators.

§Lucky it wasnt worse

It is one thing to protest and chant and cheer, to march and rally, even to shut down buildings and keep people out. But when you start trapping people inside the buildings then thats diferent. Its like taking people captive. And when you do it to a bunch of very powerful people then you should expect that they will send in their goons to come after you. You shouldn't be surprised and outraged about this. You had to know that this sort of thing would happen when you trapped people inside the building. Its a really stupid thing to do unless you are trying to provoke them. I think you got lucky that there wasn't more pepper spray and arrests.

Why would you trap people inside a building? What point does that make? Do you think anyone wants to join up with your group when you do these things?

And didn't you know the UC system was tied into the military-industrial complex BEFORE you decided to hand them thousands of dollars? If you're really so opposed to what they do, maybe you shouldn't give them your money. But you won't do that because then you won't get a good job when you graduate. It's easy to complain about whey "they" are doing, but its not as easy when you have to look in the mirror. Truth is, you are part of that system and you're too selfish to quit it.
