Socialist School on the Mexican Revolution
A class series examining the rise of the Mexican Revolution in four evening
sessions begins on November 2 at 7pm.
Session 1, November 2, 7pm Examines the bases of the indigenous movements
that have most shaken the capitalist regime in Mexico in the last 12 years—the
nature of the Spanish conquest, its limitations, the society it created. We will show
selections from videos and DVDs illustrating the Zapatista uprising of 1994 and the
present uprising in Oaxaca.
Session 2, November 9, 7pm Examine the history of the attempt to build a
capitalist economy and society in Mexico from independence to the dictatorship of
Porfirio Diaz.
Session 3, November 16, 7pm The third class will examine the Mexican
Revolution of 1910 that overthrew the Diaz dictatorship and the revolutionary
movemnets it unleashed led by Pancho Villa and Emilio Zapata.
Session 4, November 21, 7pm The fourth class will examine the history of the
socialist movement in Mexico.
The cost is for all four sessions is $10 or $3 per class.
The fee includes background readings mailed to participants upon enrollment.
Both printed material and other suggested readings (books and websites) will be
enclosed.
Teaching the classes is Gerry Foley, with over 40 years experience in
revolutionary politics. Classes can be taught in both English and Spanish.
Each class meets at the Socialist Action Bookstore, 298 Valencia St.
(corner of 14th St.) in San Francisco.
