Schwarzenegger Caught in Another Lie
Governor denies Special Interests quote in Chronicle Interview
In an interview with the San Francisco Chronicle on Wednesday,
Schwarzenegger lied about breaking his campaign promise to rid
Sacramento of special interests. "What I said was, we have to
stop money going in and favors going out," Schwarzenegger told
the Chronicle. "I never said that I would not accept money. I
never said special interests are no good and they would not be
part of the mix."
But Schwarzenegger is on record saying exactly that in 2003.
When he announced his candidacy on the Jay Leno show he told the
audience: "The biggest problem we have is that California is
being run by special interests. ... I will go to Sacramento and
clean house... As you know, I don't need to take any money from
anybody. I have plenty of money myself."
As for 'money in and favors out,' Schwarzenegger has done plenty
of that:
* Schwarzenegger vetoed six bills aimed at reducing the price of
prescription drugs while accepting $1 million from
pharmaceutical companies.
* He took $250,000 from Wal-Mart on the SAME DAY he vetoed a
labor-backed health care bill the corporation opposed.
* He vetoed several bills to keep jobs in California while
taking money from corporations like Hewlett Packard that send
jobs overseas - just to name a few examples!
To date, Schwarzenegger has raised over $108 million, including
millions from the insurance industry, which benefits from his
workers' comp benefit cuts, and investment firms that would
benefit from pension privatization.
Labor's Endorsements
Lieutenant Governor
John Garamendi:
* Wants to expand access to affordable health care for all
Californians
* Supports prevailing wage laws
* As Insurance Commissioner, increased workers' comp benefits to
injured workers
* Strongly opposes contracting out of jobs
Tom McClintock:
* Voted against expanding employment-based health care coverage
for workers
* Voted against prevailing wage legislation
* Repeatedly voted against legislation to raise the minimum wage
* Authored legislation authorizing the governor to contract out
any state service
UNION RECOMMENDATION: JOHN GARAMENDI
