2nd Wednesdays :History & Politics
October 11: Bolivar, Zapata and SandinoGhosts and Revolution in South America :
Left-leaning political movements are reshaping politics south of the U.S. border. Mobilized indigenous cultures are forming new social movements in the Andes, deposing governments and shifting the left toward a more profound anti-state and anti-imperialist politics. The state-sponsored programs in Venezuela called “Bolivarianism” and the bottom-up, grassroots Other Campaign of the Zapatistas in Mexico are altering agendas across the hemisphere. How will the new social movements reshape left-wing politics in the U.S.? How are indigenous movements re-emerging to change our thinking in both South and North America? Tonight’s discussion will try to pull these threads together and open the discussion for our own politics here in the Bay Area. (John Ross, Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, Aileen “Chockie” Cottier)
