Organic Sacramento Action Alert: Oppose the "Monsanto Law," SB1056
Two state legislators are trying to pass a “stealth” bill that would make
it illegal for citizens to pass voter initiatives to protect themselves
from Genetically Engineered agriculture in their local cities or counties.
As the bill is written, it would remove the rights of local governments
to pass ANY laws regulating the use (including the growing) of ANY seeds
and nursery stock. No adequate state or federal laws currently exist to
monitor, test, and protect us from the use of Genetically Engineered
organisms. Consequently, local governments are our last governmental
resort. The right to pass local ordinances for local citizens is
fundamental to the spirit of democracy. We fought the revolutionary war
over such key values.
Assembly member Juan Arambula (D-Fresno), 31st District, AB 1059
Dean Florez , D-Shafte, Senate District 16, Fresno, Bakersfield
The legislators’ methods for passing this legislation are underhanded.
They both tried to sneak their law under the radar by burying them in
other bills that were completely unrelated, effectively hiding the issue
from voters AND legislators. The stealth legislation is placed in Senate
Bill SB1056. The Assembly Agriculture Committee will be reviewing this
legislation in an open hearing this week. Please attend.
Wednesday, June 28th, 1:30 pm --???
Assembly Agriculture Committee Open Hearing
State Capitol, North section
Room 126, 1st floor
Please attend and state your position on the legislation. A simple
statement, such as “I oppose this legislation in its entirety.” would be
adequate and probably all you will have time for. AND that simple
statement is powerful. If we can swing one member of the committee, we
may be able to defeat this bill.
ALSO, please (1) notify your state senator and state assembly person of
your position on this bill AND (2) ask them to attend the hearing. (3) ask
them to notify you of their intentions AND their vote on this bill, should
it make it to the floor for a vote.
For questions, you can call me.
