About the Education for Peace in Iraq Center (EPIC): All donations and a portion of all proceeds will go to support EPIC. Founded in 1998, EPIC is an independent non-profit organization working through research, education and policy work to end armed conflict in Iraq, defend human rights, and help Iraqis establish their own democracy and security.
Speakers will include:
ZAID ALBANNA was born and raised in Baghdad, Iraq. He is a communications consultant and the President of EPIC's Board of Directors. Zaid has worked closely with EPIC in developing the organization's educational programs including the Faces of Iraq photo exhibit. Since the U.S. invasion, he has traveled three times to Iraq on behalf of EPIC to assess the conditions on-the-ground.
AHMED ALI, an Iraqi visiting the U.S. on a scholarship. Ahmed has lived through three major wars, UN sanctions and Saddam Hussein's regime. The son of Sunni and Shiite parents, he has lived in 15 of Iraq's 18 provinces. Since 1998, he has lived in the predominantly Kurdish city of Arbil. Ahmed recently graduated from Grinnell with a degree in Political Science. He is fluent in Arabic, Kurdish, Farsi and English.
ERIK GUSTAFSON, a veteran of the 1991 Gulf War and the founding director of EPIC. Since his 1997 return to Iraq, he has dedicated his life to improving human rights and humanitarian conditions in Iraq.
