Berkeley Bowl owners want to build a new store in West Berkeley on Heinz Ave. They won't recognize the Union that now represents workers at the Oregon Street store and they say that a Card Check is "undemocratic".
A Card Check is the most democratic in that workers sign a card saying whether they want representation by a union or not and the cards are counted and they either get it or not. It is immediate. The owner and management doesn't have time to intimidate workers into voting against an union.
The City has to Permit the site in order for it to go ahead.
The site has to be re-zoned also by the City.
What we want, is that the Bowl give a written agreement that they will recognize UFCW local 120 or AT LEAST facilitate a Card Check in order to be permitted by the City and that they will build and run a new Berkeley Bowl Store.
If the City goes ahead with the re-zoning and the permitting without this agreement, the owners could sell the property to a chain store as the value would be substantially increased with the permitting and zoning issues dealt with.
Please come to the city council meeting 6:45 in which a public hearing will take place. Come prepared to speak or to defer your time to someone who wants to speak on this issue.
