Please join co-hosts Assemblyman Mark Leno, Supervisor Bevan Dufty, Supervisor Tom Ammiano, and the San Francisco Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Community Center, for a public fundraiser to recognize the 40th Anniversary of San Francisco’s Compton’s Cafeteria Riot.
In 1966, three years before the famous rioting at New York’s Stonewall Inn, a group of transgender women and gay street-hustlers in the Tenderloin fought back for the first time against everyday police harassment. This act of resistance was a dramatic turning point for the transgender community, and one of the beginnings of a new human rights struggle that continues to this very day.
Cost: $20 sliding-scale donation includes free beer, wine and non-alcoholic drinks, as well as light food.
Donated funds will be used to support the June 22 installation of a historical marker at the original riot site, and provide completion funds for the Emmy-Award winning movie Screaming Queens, which recovered this story for today’s audiences. Compton’s Cafeteria Riot 40th Anniversary Commemoration is a fiscal project of the San Francisco Pride Committee, a registered 501(c)3 nonprofit.
Wine and beer is being provided by Young’s Market Company and The Deco Lounge. Light food is provided by Project Open Hand. Commemoration activities are also sponsored in part by Good Vibrations, San Francisco's legendary destination for accurate information about sex.
