UCSC Charged With Disadvantaging Students, Faculty and Workers of Color
On June 6th, UC Santa Cruz students and workers held multiple rallies and confronted Chancellor Denice Denton to demand affirmative diversity on campus. Workers and students are charging UCSC with active institutional racism and sexism by sustaining hidden systematic policies and practices that have the effect of disadvantaging students, faculty and workers of color. Affirmative diversity means actively working against the status quo of institutional racism and sexism at UCSC. The Diversity Coalition says the first step for UCSC is to "acknowledge it is not the progressive place it claims to be."

This Fall will be the 10 year anniversary of prop 209 - which destroyed affirmative action in CA. Word is that there will be major actions to reinstate affirmative action across UC campuses.
As usual it looks like SC is ahead of the curve. Go Santa Cruz! Let's build this up.
UCOP's statistics show pretty objectively that although the university has made some good strides in admitting more non-white and economically disadvantaged students, its has done very little to increase the numbers of non-white male faculty, especially amongst ladder rank (tenure track) appointments. Non-whites and women continue to be locked into marginal positions with little opportunity for advancement. Racism and sexism are alive and well within the UC.

Below are two quick graphs illustrating the problem of faculty homogeneity. The second graph is UC-wide.
