Who: Hélène Caux, photographer and humanitarian worker for United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)
Event: The Council will host a reception and slide presentation with Hélène Caux on the refugee and human rights crisis in Darfur. Hélène Caux’s "Surviving Darfur" photo is on display at the Council from May 16 to July 31, 2006. Her exhibit documents the lives of refugees from the Darfur region of Sudan. Hélène Caux spent 2004 traveling between eastern Chad and Darfur, Sudan, as part of an ongoing collaboration with the UNHCR to document the refugee and human rights crisis, and she returned to the region in 2005. Her photographs portray the unfolding humanitarian crisis in Sudan and Chad, where an estimated 200,000 people have been killed or died of starvation or disease and more than 2.2 million people have been forced to flee their homes.
