March on Highway 101
The national immigration debate hit the North Coast on Monday as protesters marched in solidarity with national demonstrations on behalf of immigration reform across the country. This morning, at least two protest marches were in the works, one in Eureka from Broadway to the courthouse, and the other from Arcata heading south on U.S. Highway 101, believed to also be converging on the courthouse.
In the Highway 101 march, which included 35-40 people by one estimate, at least three people were arrested or detained by authorities. Officials also knocked down a Times-Standard photographer covering the event, and briefly threatened that staffer with arrest.
A law enforcement helicopter was circling over both events Monday morning.

i saw it all. the police arrested three women on 101 after our group decided that we would not walk to eureka on the railroad tracks but on the safty corredor, were we were told that it was ok to march by police the day before. They were arrested while we weren't. the police stated that they "only needed three". That sounds like a quota to me. the cops used violence on a peaceful demo, causing us to try and yank our friends away, for our friends safety. This cop that looked like cheney had a look of glee on his face
Something not mentioned: Mostly young PEOPLE OF COLOR walking that day. That has been ignored by all media, forgotten in the discussions. All walkers were peaceful. No "scuffle" - a blatant police attack to stomp out dissent and divide, for one, the Latin@ community. The incident will likely be ignored, for the most part, by the white so-called 'progressive' community, as is the escalating violence and killings by the largest U.S. 'police' force at the border...
