Montana Prof Threatened After Speaking Out Against Homophobia

by 365gay.com
(Butte, Montana) A professor at Montana Tech says his life has been threatened after speaking out against homophobia on the campus of the school, part of the University of Montana in Butte.
John Ray said the threat was made in an email that he has turned over to police.

The threat was made after Ray sent a campus wide email criticizing another professor who had emailed students and faculty denouncing a decision to show the movie "Brokeback Mountain at the school.

Ray responded by sending several emails promoting tolerance toward gays.

"Shut the fuck up," the threatening email to Ray said. "Please stop sending these stupid emails. Get a shrink if you need someone to communicate with. We don't care!!!!!!!!!! I swear to God I will find where you live and beat you if you keep sending these dumb emails out to everyone."

Ray said that after receiving the threat he has been receiving email "pop ups" on his e-mail advertising gay and child pornography Web sites and believes someone got his campus email “user code” and registered his address to the Web sites.

Police say that the threatening email has a return Web address but that it is not yet clear if that was the original source of the threat.

A forensics investigator is examining Ray's computer to see if it has been tampered with and the schools server to trace the email sent to him.

Professor Ray, had you spammed me (disclosing your email address) you would have received a warning too. It would have explained that you needed to ask first, that not to do so was rude. Not a denial of your rights of free speech -- but I would have pointed out that if you had the right to send as many unsolicited emails as you desired to my address (when you had no reason to believe I wished to receive them) then I had the same right to send whatever quantity I desired to yours -- and may the best support team win. In other words, a warning not threatening to punch you in the nose, but that if you didn't cut it out, to program my computers to "return fire".

And I would have done this in spite of the fact that I approve the message (you had no reasonable expectation that I would). Spam is spam. So cut the crap about homophobia being involved. Do you really imagine that your messages would have been better received if they were offers of drugs, replica watches, porn sites, etc.?
