Student Initiated Outreach and Academic Preparation:
280 High School Students attend Student Initiated Outreach Programs
to bring equity and diversity to UCSC
What: 280 High School Students attend Student-Initiated Outreach Program
Where: Women’s Center, UC Santa Cruz
When: Friday, April 7th at 12 Noon
In and effort to address the lack of diversity in institutions of higher education and the challenges historically under-represented and under-resourced students face in these institutions, three student-initiated and student-run outreach programs will bring 280 high school students from around the state of California to the UCSC campus for a 3-day program during April 6-8.
High School students will be participants in one of the following student-initiated and student run outreach programs: Destination Higher Education (DHE), organized by The African/Black Student Alliance (A/BSA); Oportunidades Rumbo A la Educacion (ORALE), organized by Movimiento Estudiantil Chicana/Chicano de Aztlan (MEChA); and A Step Forward (ASF), organized by The Filipino Student Association (FSA).
The programs encourage students to continue into higher education and highlight social interaction and community building with currently enrolled UCSC students while providing them with the necessary tools to academically prepare them for a college atmosphere. Student panels, tours, Financial Aid and EOP Workshops and other activities make participants aware of the resources available at UCSC, while their culturally enriched components foster ethnic awareness and pride.
DHE, ASF, and ORALE will have a collaborate Barbeque Lunch and a collaborate Dinner on Friday April 7th.
Photo and Interview Opportunities will be available.
