Hunger Strike & Vigil continue at San Francisco Federal Building
The seven-day hunger strike and 24-hour-per-day vigil culminates Monday, March 28th, with a march to Senator Diane Feinstein's office at Montgomery and Market.
Immigrant communities and their allies are in the midst of a week long series of actions to demand that the US Senate vote against pending legislation which criminalizes undocumented immigrants and service providers who assist them, requires day laborer centers to check immigration papers, and requires local law enforcement to work as federal immigration agents. It has already passed the US House of Representatives, and is currently being debated by the US Senate.

Why do you have a photograph of a guy in a ski mask. It does not appear to be cold. Whe the mask?
Fear of repression.
So what's the big deal about becoming legal? I know lots of people who followed the law and are here legally, including my wife. Why is it that the Mexicans cannot do this?
Fear of repression. No, he is probably wanted.

It doesn't surprise me that so many people feel so much anger toward the mexicans. it is in this nation's heritage to exploit other races (remember the native americans and the african americans?). if you throw everyone into one neat category and say that all mexicans must be criminals and therefore need to hide behind masks (prejudging) it is easier to say "just sweep them all back". Mexicans must sneak across the border because to wait the time and pay the money to come in legally is not going to put bread in their stomachs (or their elderly parents stomachs or their children's stomachs). They are not coming here to take over the country, everyone knows they pay taxes, and if you ask any one of them they will tell you that they would love to be able to provide for their families in their home countries if they could do it as effectively as they can from here. You can't deny what they do to raise this country up, unless you are ignorant and stubborn. There are good and bad, just like ANY race. There is tremendous sacrfice involved in leaving your family behind. And it takes great risk to come across the border the way they do, I challenge anyone who takes this journey lightly to attempt it themselves. We are all human, and what a wonderful world it would be if we never forgot that. in the mean time, enjoy your fruits, your veetables, your clean hotels and yards, and even your christmas trees while they are still available and affordable.
can be traced directly to an unwise immigration policy on the part of Native Americans.
In response to the previous comments..... the point is that it is very, very, very difficult for Mexican immigrants to #1 get a visa in order to enter the country "legally" and to #2 get the documentation, get papers when they are here. why don't they get documentation legally? why don't people enter legally BECAUSE THEY CAN"T. check out the US immigration web site when they have lotteries for immigration THEY DONT LET MEXICANS apply, And to get a visa costs $$$$, People can't feed their families, how can they buy a visa. AND it needs to be approved, this country doesn't make it easy for Mexicans and OTHER undocumented people to enter the country, and yes MEXICANS are not the ONLY undocumented immigrants, or Latino immigrants. Why, because this country makes a profit off undocumented people, because if this country had a mechanism that supported immigrants to enter this country legally, they would have to give people RIGHTS which is sooooo inconvenient because it would mean paying people decent wages, AND do you really think people enjoy entering "illegally"?????? oh yes that train trip and brisk walk across the frontera is so enjoyable, that's why human rights workers have to rescue dying people from the border.... not to mention the people who are maimed and killed along the way... Why? hummmm, NEXT study NAFTA fools!!!!!
Why the mask... it's very likely it's in reference to another movement for equal rights going on in Chiapas MX, which is so activists can be anonymous so they won't get assassinated, and to be a symbol of ... UNITY, we are all equal, we are all the same..... equal rights for all regardless

Because taking on poverty from Mexico is not working here. They are definitely taking jobs away. Here in SF for instance, any caucasians or blacks work doing dishes anymore? Street cleaning? Janitorial? Construction? Pizza or pizza delivery?
That's why there's a whole lot of pissed off people about this. We have lost our own working class jobs unless we are illegal.
