Get a Seat at the Table: Foraging a Career in Social Justice

Discussion will focus on various routes people can take to pursue a career dedicated to social justice. To
emphasize the importance of tackling social problems from multiple fronts (i.e., with policy, research, and
community participation), this talk will highlight Dr. Downing?s work in the AIDS community in Los Angeles,
her work as a Congressional Fellow in the United States Senate, her training as a feminist social psychologist,
and her personal life. This talk will address the lack of representation of people of color at the upper levels of
education and policy and how students can overcome barriers to infiltrate systems of power and privilege and
have their voices heard by decision makers.
