Subject: Proposed plan to locate a Burrowing Owl Habitat on the Albany Plateau
On March 2, 2006, the Albany Waterfront Committee will review draft plans for a proposed burrowing owl habitat to be located at the Albany Plateau. The proposed plan would result in the creation of a protected area (fenced off) for burrowing owls. The size of the protected area would comprise about 10 acres of this approximately 20-acre site.
The approval process for this plan involves consideration by State Parks (owner) and the East Bay Regional Park District (local operator). Input from the City of Albany is being sought. Creation of a burrowing owl habitat is a required mitigation measure by the environmental review for the planned Gilman Street Playing Fields Project within the City of Berkeley. The Albany Plateau has been identified as an acceptable location and would be consistent with the Eastshore State Park Plan.
If you wish more information on this project, please call the Albany Community Development Department at (510) 528-5760.
