Young Immigrant Family URGENTLY Needs Your Support!

Dear sisters, brothers and friends,

Please read this. We need your help in this emergency situation.

Last Thursday in San Francisco at 7 in the morning, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents with guns busted into the apartment of two Young Workers United members*. The couple was excitedly preparing for the birth of their first child, scheduled for this week. We have every reason to believe the mother’s former employers called the ICE on this young family.
The employer of the mother was paying far below the legal minimum wage. The employer also yelled at workers, threatened them with deportation, called them racial slurs and finally, fired the mother for speaking out and organizing against these abuses and being pregnant. The mother has been a brave leader in fighting for workers’ rights in the face of threats from the employer.

The father was taken away and flown that night to a detention center in Eloy, Arizona. It is virtually impossible to get into the detention center and 90% of the detainees have no access to a lawyer. The father is still there and YWU is working tirelessly to coordinate with lawyers and Arizona immigrant rights group to get the father all the resources he needs.

This morning we took the mother to the hospital and it looks like she will give birth to a healthy baby boy this week. YWU has helped win a minimum wage charge through the City and has claims for pregnancy discrimination and retaliation. .

These worker leaders fought for the ideals we all try to honor everyday: respect, equality and fairness. They need your help. The mother has no income since the ICE is detaining her partner. We are doing everything we can but we need your help. If you can donate food or money, you can help fight this racist, horrific system that would tear a newborn baby from his parents.

Please send checks for whatever you can give to Center for Labor Research and Training (YWU’s fiscal sponsor) at PO Box 15866, SF CA 94115. If you can give food, please call our office at 415-621-4155.

In struggle, in solidarity, and in thanks,
Young Workers United

*Due to legal considerations, we cannot name the couple or the restaurant.

Were any charges filed with the Labor Commissioner against the employer for paying less than the legal minimum wage? If not, this should be done immediately. If so, then the employer's name and violation is a public record and we can and should know the name of the employer so we can all boycott the employer. Telling the employer to pay more can only be done once; when that does not work, legal action must be taken. It would also help to have a picketline around the employer's business to guarantee a legal victory.

By the way, this is nothing new. Every wave of immigrants soon learns the US is just another stinking, rotten capitalist country.

Familiar story.

I have no sympathy at all for illegal aliens.
They have a country and they usually have a President.

Go home and fix your damn country.
Americans are tired of illegals and their damn hostility!

to the ignorant person that wrote the above dribble, you should move down to cuba. I was born and raised there and I can tell you from frirst hand experience that a communist nation is far worse than what you have here in the states. The u.s. is paradise compared to conditions in my homeland. Of course you never been outside the states like many young radicals and think the conditions are better elsewhere. You need to travel or something and see the real thing up close, not what you read in ur books.

That's what greedy people always think, immigrants and "natives" alike. That's why they've been swarming here from all over the world and hybridizing for the past 400 years. If you're greedy, "freedom" means being able to claw your way up the class food chain ripping throats out as you go. The total criterion of "a great country" is one that showers you with wealth and privileges, never mind the grave costs to others, or that you're really just a glorified slave, aka "employee/consumer," who isn't really free at all. Greedy people are blind to anything beyond themselves. For them personal enrichment is the total meaning of "quality of life." Altruism is an idea for space aliens.

Just open your eyes, this fact of American character is plain as day.

For every immigrant like "Cubano," infatuated by how greedy he can be here, there's another with a clear mind who comes here, pukes the kool-aid back out, and realizes this society is super fucked up. A lot of them leave in disgust, but of course you never hear about this. It's just one more thing Americans don't want to know.
