On December 1, 2005, 60,000 members of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) launched a 9 day general strike against casualization/temporary work in Korea.
http://www.todayonline.com/articles/87702.asp More than 50% of the workers in Korea are part time and like in the US, these temporary workers have no benefits, healthcare and pensions. This strike puts a critical focus on the problem of temporary and part time workers who face the same problems around the world.
The San Francisco Labor Council, AFT 2121, ILWU Local 10 and other unions have passed resolutions supporting this initiative. This forum will discuss these issues and we also will screen the important Korean labor film "On The Right Track". This film shows the struggle for democratic control by the Korean railway workers and their successful fight against the privatization of the Korean railway system.
The workers were able to take control of their union and also launch an important national fight against privatization. This has many lessons for working people in the United States.
The Bay Area Labor Action Coalition fights for democratic unions, against labor-management partnerships and for a democratic workers party that will opposed deregulation, privatization and outsourcing of our jobs. We also support labor action against the war in Iraq.
