Man, when I read this headline I was like, "fuck yeah, that's some serious progress! They got a recruitment center shut down!" and I was super happy, but then I read more and realized that it wasn't "shut down" meaning "closed for business forever because some intelligent people made a real effort to convince the locals or the people in charge that what they were doing was a bad idea" but rather "shut down" meaning "temporarily inconvenienced". Bummer.

On the recruitment center doors was a sign left by the recruiters which said something like this: Gone for the day,we are at the high schools recruiting your children. Ha Ha. Few people look for jobs on Friday. To have a national recruitment center call for shutdown on Friday lacks foresight. It would be better scheduled for any other day of the week. One more depressing note the "critical mass" (picture of cyclists on the Eureka Slough Bridge) had a prearranged police escort---basically the critical mass called for was taken over by veteran authoritarians who like to dictate to others, especially feral youth, how they should protest. The wide acceptance of police helicopters---people in Humboldt have fought "marijuana eradication" helicopter use for years--- was also disappointing. To sum up most of the hippies felt great that they had filled some obligation for another six months.A real bummer.

concerning the "police escort":
The highway patrol told those who talked to them that a PERMIT was required in order for the bike ride to happen. The permit was to cost $1000 or something, and the riders refused to pay. The CHP "escorted" and harrassed the riders anyways.

concerning the "acceptance of helicopter":
just because the helicopter was not shot down does not mean that it was "accepted." Yes, it would be nice if the majority of Humboldt residents would show some support for the riders, but I hardly think that the hedlicopter was seen as "ok" by the riders.

concerning the take-over of critical mass by "authoritarians":
well, that's pretty much on the mark, as near as I can see. It was a critical submission of the masses, as local politicians played middle-man between the kids and the cops. The cop that assaulted Kat Zimmerman on Nov 2nd (named Officer Randy Price, CHP) should be held accountable for his VIOLENT CRIME. Instead, for some reason, a deal was worked out so that riders would not be assaulted again. Some deal.
STILL, I believe in supporting those that went on the ride (except sell-outs like Kevin Hoover of the Arcata Eye) for using bicycle transportation, defying the CHP as much as rationally possible, and not being afraid.

I agree that most of the riders didn't accept the helicopters, but the political leaders and those that follow them, in all news accounts I read and heard, including community radio KMUD, failed to mention the helicopters (and the excessive police state) that they had heavily denounced during the previous action on Dec. 2. They said things to the effect "there were no problems today".

The local politicians did in fact arrange for a police escort and for the highway to be swept clean, although critcal mass riders did not have to go on this "prearranged ride", most but not all did. I just thought it should be noted that at least in my view, the autonomy of the critical mass was subjected to authorities within the anti-war coalition.

The problem with the US military is that it trains people to murder, plunder, torture and rob in the name of the flag and gives morally weak individuals an opportunity to become the very worst that they can be.
