Photos from Camp Casey, Cindy Sheehan, Gold Star Families
Crawford, Texas: Yesterday was Cindy Sheehan’s first full day back at Camp Casey. At a morning press conference, a dozen Gold Star family members and relatives of servicepersons currently in the military each briefly addressed a bank of microphones. Each explained what compelled them to travel to Camp Casey in order to stand with Cindy.
Crawford, Texas (August 26, 2005)
Yesterday was Cindy Sheehan’s first full day back at Camp Casey. The morning press conference featured a dozen Gold Star family members and relatives of servicepersons currently in the military. One by one mothers and widows of troops killed in Iraq stepped up to the bank of microphones and briefly described their immense loss, and driving force that compelled them to come across the country to Crawford, Texas in their search for real answers.
There is a lot of talk about the “anti-Cindy” caravan headed into town this evening. Allegedly these “stay the course” folks number over two thousand. Camp Casey has consistently been under whelmed by similar pro-war mobilizations, however, it may be different this time. Meanwhile, the camp is gearing up for the final weekend of activities, including a Saturday country hoe-down with hundreds of new visitors.
Among Camp Casey’s impressive support network that includes daily serviced toilets, traffic control, meals, and wireless Internet, is medical care provided by medics and doctors. After breaking a toe yesterday, I eventually became a “sick bay commando” (that’s military lingo) after it turned purple. The Camp Casey first aid tent provided first rate attention and care. They would rather be dealing with broken toes than heat stoke -- a half dozen folks have been rushed to the hospital so far.

Thankyou for your hard work and dedication to Peace!
Thanks to Jeff for so beautifully documenting this wonderful gathering of peaceable people. It really brings this event to those of us who can't be there and crave to know what it going on.
Jeff -- This is one of my favorite pics of Cindy. Thanks for your great work in documenting what's been going on at Crawford these past weeks. Great work!
On Saturday, my husband and I went to Crawford. It was wonderful to see all the many people that are dedicated to Peace. I thought it was great that two such opposing sides could be together without violence and voice their ideas peacefully, if only the rest of the world could come together like this. Whether you stand for or against Cindy, it is wonderful to live in a country that we have the freedom to stand up against what is wrong and speak our minds without being crushed. Thanks to the welcoming arms at the Peace House and to the many sheriffs and peace officers that were working double-duty in the heat to make sure that this event was a reflection of our goal....Peace.
Unless you're Wellstone. Or John O'Neill. Or James Hatfield. Or a microbiologist. Or a journalist in Iraq. So nice that Americans can have a polite political disagreement while Iraqis die by the dozens daily. Makes me swell with pride every time I burn the flag.
